Default Mailing List Charter
This charter applies to any list hosted on this server that
does not have its own charter statement, or if this charter is
included by explicit reference in such a charter document. It
does not apply otherwise.
Basic Requirements
- All interactions with this list must comply with the
standard mailing list terms of
use.
-
For the sake of politeness, messages must not:
- include for-profit advertising;
- use objectionable or abusive language; or
- contain ad-hominem attacks;
-
For the technical compliance, messages must not:
- exceed 51200 bytes (50 kB), including encoding but
excluding headers;
- have attachments other than human-readable plain
text; or
- have any active scripting;
and must:
- be sent from your own replyable address
It is your responsibility as the sender to ensure that your
messages comply with these requirements; this means that you
have to understand what will happen when you hit the "send"
button: it's your duty to know what the consequences of your
actions will be. If you are unsure of how to ensure compliance
with these requirements, please contact me for more
information.
Common Mistakes
- Adding the list address to your address book without
checking the "plain text only" option.
-
Misunderstanding the "no attachments" rule:
I was careful, I sent my document "as message" rather
than "as attachment".
The important part of the rule isn't whether it's an attachment or
not, it's the requirement for "nothing but plain text"; sending it
as the body instead of as an attachment doesn't alter the fact that
most "documents" are not plain text.
- Using a word processing program (such as MS Word or Lotus
Notes) to prepare the text of a message, and then sending it
without checking the "send as plain text" option: if the
program doesn't have a "plain text" option then don't
use it for e-mail.
